The cation polisher is used after a two bed demineralization process to polish off the trace P. Alikalinity formed in the strong base anion exchanger by cation slip from the strong acid cation exchanger.
The P. Alkalinity causes a rise in pH and conductivity of de mineralized water. The removal of P. Alkalinity restores pH to neutral value and reduces conductivity to much below one micro – Siemens per cm similar to that attained mixed bed de mineralization.
The cation polisher thus substitutes the mixed bed in achieving the conductivity specification and can be used conveniently when silica specification is obtained from the strong base anion exchanger. The cation polisher utilizes S AC resin in the hydrogen form and is regenerated with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.
