The anion exchanger in the two bed deminerelisation process is expanded to two anion beds – primary and secondary – to accommodate two different anion exchange resins each assigned for specific duty.
The three bed demineralization process may be composed as follows:
S A C -> Degasser -> W B A -> S B A
This process gives the best regeneration efficiency while ensuring the quality of water with respect to silica. The W B A resin absorbs all free mineral acids generated in the Hydrogen ion unit. The S B A resin absorbs all the silica in the influent water together with residual carbon dioxide from the degasser and the slip of neutral salt from the W B A resin.
Both the resins are regenerated by the process of thoroughfare regeneration. In thoroughfare regeneration the entire quantity of regenerant sodium hydroxide required for the system is passed first through the secondary anion. The spent regenerant is then thoroughfared through the primary anion to drain. In this manner the secondary anion receives a high dose of regenerant that elutes all ions absorbed in the previous cycle and maintains the bed in a high state of regeneration to provide the low silica residuals desired. The primary anion is regenerated co flow but the secondary may be designed for co flow or counterflow regeneration.
